Located on the A4146 between Leighton Buzzard and Hemel Hempstead, Hemel Hempstead Garden Centre lies in the pretty village of Great Gaddesden. Originally a watercress farm during the war (popular for its high iron content as meat was scarce), it later became a nursery growing plants for the owner’s landscaping business. Known as Broadwater Nursery for the artificial lake nearby, it thrived until the devastating drought of 1976 when the owning family joined forces with a local investor to build a garden centre.
The rest, as they say, is history; the centre is now run by friendly and knowledgeable staff who like nothing better than to share their expertise with amateur and experienced gardeners alike. Loyalty is key here in terms of staff (as well as customers!) and in fact three members of the team have been with the centre since 1982!
Whilst top quality growing stock and the vast array of gardening products form the heart of the business, these are complemented with a great range of garden furniture, wild bird care products, giftware, cards and a concession selling conservatories. Links with the local community are strong, with the local school especially benefitting from many a raffle prize!
