Garden Centre Manager
Opened by Percy Thrower in 1971, Springfield Garden Centre was, at the time, the largest horticultural centre in Essex. Known as Cuton Hall Garden Centre after the Doomsday book entry that recorded the area as Kewtonia, it was owned by the visionary Cramphorn family who, way ahead of their time, made the centre a 'family outing' venue, introducing 7 day-a-week opening, a 'refreshment centre', a children's play area and even a 'Borrovan' service for purchases too large for the customer's car (car keys were traded for the company pick up!).
Located north east of Chelmsford and staffed by horticultural experts now as then, the centre offers top quality hardy nursery stock, bedding and houseplants as well as a wide array of gardening products. Every staff member has a wealth of gardening expertise they love to share with customers and one has more than 20 years' experience at the centre!
Whilst plants and gardening remain the primary focus, the centre also has a fantastic restaurant serving freshly prepared food and homemade cakes. Enthusiasm and helpfulness are key elements here, as befits a centre in Springfield, source of 34 namesakes in the US, including the hometown of the Simpsons!
