Visit the stunning Harkness Rose Centre at Hitchin Garden Centre
Visitors to Hitchin Garden Centre can now enjoy our state-of-the-art Harkness Rose Centre which has been built by Harkness Roses. Harkness Roses of Hitchin are one of the UK’s oldest rose growers and breeders with over 130 years of experience. They have bred many famous and well known roses including ‘Compassion’, ‘Margaret Merril’ and ‘The Princess of Wales’ rose to name but a few.
A regular exhibitor at the Chelsea Flower Show, Harkness Roses was recently awarded a Gold Medal in May 2010, one of many during the years. It has also launched several new roses for 2010 including ‘Twiggy’s Rose’ – a shrub rose in honour of the English fashion icon Twiggy.
Currently run by the fourth generation of the family, brothers Philip and Robert Harkness, the nursery breeds and grows all types of roses.
The Rose Centre has over 200 varieties of roses available to buy, including modern hybrid teas, floribundas, climbers and old-fashioned shrubs making it the perfect place to see, smell and choose the correct rose for your garden.
The plants have been grown in larger containers to promote their robust healthy growth, so that when planted out in the summer, they will quickly make a wonderful display in the garden.
Expert advice is always available at our garden centre to help you get your roses off to the best start and choose which varieties are suitable for your garden.
Hitchin Garden Centre has recently been refurbished with special attention given to the horticultural excellence on-site. There is also a restaurant on-site offering freshly prepared and home-cooked food.
The Rose Centre is a wonderful excuse for a day out and with roses in full bloom, there is no better time than now to come and visit.
Anyone who likes roses will love visiting us and we look forward to welcoming you to our garden centre.
