How do I know what end up the bulb should be when planting?
It is best if bulbs are planted with the pointy top from which the bulb will grow pointing upwards. Even though bulbs come in all sorts of sizes, fundamentally it is pretty easy to identify which end is which! The base of the bulb from which the roots will grow is flattened with a central rough area with in many cases clearly visible shrivelled roots. The tops of most bulbs are pointy and smoother.
It can be harder to work out with some bulbs, like knobbly anemones, so if you're not sure, simply plant them on their sides and they will soon right themselves as they grow.
