The area at the side of my house is always in the shade. Are there any flowering shrubs recommended for shady areas? Are there any other colorful plants that might thrive in this area?

Shady spots can be as equally rewarding as sunny sites. Listed below are a range of tried and trusted favourites for growing in shady spots.

Rhoddendrons require ACID SOIL, moisture and dappled shade to grow - if you have such conditions listed below are some of our favourites:

Rhododendron yakushimanum ‘Koichiro Wada’

Rhododendron luteum

Rhododendron ‘Dopey’

Lovely genus fabulously scented flowers during the spring, listed below are tow of the best and easiest to grow varieties:

Daphne odora ‘Aureomarginata’

Daphne b.  Jacqueline Bostill

A super small to medium evergreen shrub, all have attractive dark green foliage and a tidy bushy habit, they are as tough as old boots and flower for weeks and weeks once they are established, the flowers are totally insignificant and appear for many weeks from mid winter but wow the scent is a dream, a must have plant for any garden- I have selected one of the best and widely available species
