Clematis 'Edouard Desfosse' is a compact, free-flowering variety with large pale violet-blue flowers with slightly darker stripes and dark red anthers in May-June and again in August-September. Suitable for training up a wall, arch or trellis and for growing up a tripod or obelisk in a container. Height and spread 2m by 90cm (6.5ft x 3ft).
Plant in deep, fertile, humus-rich soil, preferably in light shade, with its roots in shade. For container-growing, use a 50:50 mix of John Innes No 3 potting compost and multi-purpose compost. Keep well watered and feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season.
Pruning group 2: in February or March remove dead, damaged or weak stems and cut remaining stems back to the highest strong pair of buds.
