Clematis 'The President', raised almost 150 years ago, is one of the most popular of all Clematis, with large deep purple-blue flowers with a paler bar down the centre of each petal and a cluster of attractive red anthers in June and July and again in September and October. Suitable for training up a wall, arch or trellis with other climbers or up an obelisk in a border or large container.

Height and spread 2-3m by 1m (6.5-10ft x 40in). Plant in deep, well-drained, humus-rich soil, in sun or partial shade, with its roots in shade. Mulch around the roots in spring with well-rotted manure or compost and feed with a slow release fertilizer. Keep plants in containers well watered and feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser during the growing season.

Pruning group 2: prune lightly before growth begins in February- March.
