Lonicera x brownii 'Dropmore Scarlet', the Scarlet trumpet honeysuckle, is a vigorous climbing deciduous or semi-evergreen honeysuckle with clusters of flamboyant bright scarlet flowers (sadly not scented) from early summer to autumn. Grows around 4m high by 1.2m.
Thrives in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil, on a sunny warm wall, with the roots shaded. Tie in to horizontal wires at 45cm intervals. Keep well watered in dry weather. Mulch with garden compost or well-rotted manure in spring. Keep an eye out for aphids and spray when seen. Pruning only necessary to restrict size, in late winter.
Bee and butterfly friendly.
