Chaenomeles x superba 'Crimson and Gold' is one of the best of the Japanese quinces, with bright crimson flowers with golden stamens along the bare branches a joyful sight from February to May, followed by ornamental golden-yellow fruits which can be used for jelly-making. Comparatively low-growing and spreading, ideal for training under house windows or on low walls and fences. Height and spread 1m by 2m, though can be trained up to 1.5m.
Thrives in any well-drained, fertile soil, in sun or light shade. Prune annually after flowering.
