Berberis thunbergii f. atropurpurea 'Red Chief' (barberry) is a colourful and distinctive variety bearing slender glossy purplish-red leaves on prickly red stems. Small pale lemon-yellow flowers are borne in spring followed by edible scarlet berries and red foliage come autumn. Good for hedging and as a specimen.
Medium-sized hardy deciduous shrub. Prefers well-drained humus-rich soil but tolerant of most soils as long as they are reasonably well-drained. Plant in full sun for best foliage colour.
