Ilex x altaclerensis 'Golden King'
Holly - 3 litres
Ilex x altaclerensis 'Golden King' is the best known and most popular golden-variegated holly, with broad, matt, deep green, mainly spineless leaves. The fantastic evergreen golden variegated foliage makes an excellent provider of garden colour whatever the weather, particularly in the winter months.
In spite of its name, a female variety, with reasonable crops of red berries, if pollinated by a male holly nearby. Makes a fine free-standing specimen, screen or hedge.
Grows around 1.75m high in 10 years. Capable of growing up to 6m by 3m in time, but size can be limited indefinitely by pruning in summer.
Thrives in moist but well-drained, fertile soil, in sun or light shade. For a hedge, plant 45cm apart and trim in early spring or July.
This plant has an RHS Award of Garden Merit.
