Ilex aquifolium 'J.C. van Tol'
Holly - 3 litres
Ilex aquifolium 'J.C.van Tol' is the well-known self-fertile holly able to produce good crops of bright red berries without the need for a male pollinator. With its distinctive slightly puckered, more or less spineless, glossy dark green evergreen leaves it makes a fine specimen shrub or screening plant in a lawn, shrub or mixed border or woodland, and even in a large container. It also makes a good dense hedging plant. Height and spread 1.5-2m by 1.5m (5-6ft x 5ft) in 10 years; capable of growing up to 6m by 2.5m (20ft x 8ft) in time, but can be kept compact indefinitely by trimming annually any time from spring to late summer.
Thrives in moist but well-drained fertile soil in a sunny or partially-shaded position, sheltered from cold winds. For a hedge, plant 45cm (18in) apart. For growing in a container use a 50/50 mix of John Innes No 3 and a multi-purpose compost.
