Magnolia grandiflora, the Evergreen Magnolia or Bull bay, is a large evergreen shrub or small tree, with handsome, large, glossy, deep green leaves, with brown felt beneath and large, sweetly scented, cream-white flowers in late summer and autumn. A native of the South Eastern United States, it is the state flower of Mississippi and of Louisiana. It was first introduced to Britain and other European countries nearly 300 years ago. Height and spread 5-6m. x 3-5m (16-20ft x 10-16ft).
Plant in well-drained, fertile soil, by a sunny, sheltered wall. Tolerant of chalky as well as acid soil. Keep well watered during first two seasons-tolerant of dry conditions once established. Mulch around roots in spring and autumn.
