Lavandula pedunculata 'Papillon'
French Lavender - 2 litres
Lavandula pedunculata 'Papillon' is one of the best French lavenders, with dense spikes of purple flowers topped with violet 'butterfly wing' bracts with reddish-purple midribs in late spring and summer and intensely aromatic greyish green, evergreen foliage. Highly attractive to butterflies and bees and excellent for cutting and drying. Ideal with other Mediterranean plants such as cistus and phlomis. Height and spread 60cm.
Plant in well-drained soil in a sunny position sheltered from cold winds. Not as hardy as English lavender-needs a warm spot. Hates cold wet soil. Avoid rich soils. Can be grown in a patio container though this would need protection from frost in winter. Trim lightly after flowering in late summer.
This plant has an RHS Award of Garden Merit.
