Aucuba japonica 'Variegata' (spotted laurel) is a female variety bearing handsome glossy foliage generously splashed with yellow. Red berries appear come autumn if pollinated by a nearby male variety. The first aucuba to reach the west, it was a prominent feature of Victorian shrubberies. Extremely tolerant of shade and dry conditions.
Medium-sized to large hardy evergreen shrub. Thrives in most soils in sun, partial or deep shade. Tolerant of poor dry soil once established but objects to cold winter winds and frost pockets.
