Eryngium planum, the Blue eryngo or Sea holly, is an easily grown perennial forming a compact clump of dark green leaves from which rise slender branching stems of small silver- blue globe-shaped flowers with spiny blue-green bracts, from July to September. Attractive to bees and butterflies and particularly good as cut flowers and for drying. Grows 75-100cm by 45cm (30-40in x 18in).
Suitable for the front or middle of a sunny mixed border, in ordinary well-drained soil. Avoid rich soils. Good for seaside gardens.
British nursery grown.
