Hosta fortunei var. aureomarginata Hosta Fort. Aureomarginata
Hosta, Plantain lily - 2 litres
Hosta fortunei> var. aureomarginata is an old variety but still one of the best as well as one of the easiest to grow. Forms a solid mound of handsome deep green oval to heart-shaped leaves with a clear irregular yellow margin, with prolific lily-like pale lavender flowers in July. Leaves and flowers are both good for flower arranging. Ideal among evergreen and deciduous shrubs, associating well with other hostas, ferns and heuchera's. Excellent in containers. Height and spread 60cm by 1m.
Plant in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil, in sun or partial shade. For growing in containers, use a 50/50 mix of John Innes no 3 and a good multi-purpose compost. Mulch in spring, avoiding contact with the plant. Apply liquid slug killer from early spring at fortnightly intervals for 6-8 weeks. Feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid feed from spring to midsummer. Keep Hostas in containers well watered and feed fortnightly with a liquid feed throughout the growing season. Split and replant plants in containers every 2 to 3 years.
