Alcea rosea 'Nigra' is one of the most striking of Hollyhocks, with tall stems of single near-black maroon flowers with yellow centres, much visited by bees, all through the second half of summer. Perfect for informal cottage garden style borders and for planting by walls. Height and spread 1.5-2.5m by 60cm.
Plant in well-drained, moderately fertile soil, in a sunny site, sheltered from strong winds. Best discarded and renewed after 2 to 3 years.
