Agapanthus 'Northern Star'

Agapanthus 'Northern Star' is a magnificent, hardy, deciduous variety with prolific large heads of dark purple buds opening to blue flowers striped darker blue over several weeks in late summer. The seedheads are decorative up to late autumn. The handsome deciduous leaves are distinguished by a deep violet flush at the base. Lovely in a sunny border or container and superb as cut flowers. Attractive to butterflies. A good seaside plant. Height and spread 1m by 45cm.
Plant in spring or summer in moist but well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered position. Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertiliser until flowering. Cover with a protective dry mulch in winter. To grow in containers, use John Innes No 3 potting compost, water freely during the growing season, keep dry in a frost-free place over winter.
Bee and butterfly friendly.
