Hosta 'Sum & Substance'
Hosta, Plantain lily - 2 litres
Hosta 'Sum and Substance' is one of the most spectacular of all Hostas, with huge broadly oval green-gold leaves, smooth at first, becoming puckered in maturity. Pale lilac, bell-shaped flowers open in July and August. Leaves and flowers are both good for flower arranging. Ideal among evergreen and deciduous shrubs, associating well with other hostas, ferns and heuchera's. Excellent in containers. Height and spread 75cm by 1.5m (30in x 5ft).
Plant in moist but well drained, humus-rich soil, in sun or dappled shade,-the foliage is more yellow in sun- sheltered from wind. Mulch in spring, avoiding contact with the plant. Feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid feed from spring to midsummer. Apply liquid slug killer from early spring at fortnightly intervals for 6-8 weeks. For growing in containers, use a 50/50 mix of John Innes no 3 and a good multi-purpose compost. Keep hostas in containers well watered and feed fortnightly with a liquid feed throughout the growing season. Split and replant plants in containers every 2 to 3 years.
