Hosta 'Wide Brim' (v)
Hosta, Plantain lily
Hosta 'Wide Brim' is a first rate variety with rich green heart-shaped leaves with wide, irregular cream margins. Palest lavender to white flowers open in June and July. Superb in the garden, in containers and for flower arranging. Ideal among evergreen and deciduous shrubs, associating well with other hostas, ferns and heuchera's. Height and spread 55cm by 85cm.
Plant in moist but well-drained, humus-rich soil, in dappled or full shade, sheltered from wind. For growing in containers, use a 50/50 mix of John Innes no 3 and a good multi-purpose compost. Mulch in spring, avoiding contact with the plant. Feed fortnightly with a balanced liquid feed from spring to midsummer. Apply liquid slug killer from early spring at fortnightly intervals for 6-8 weeks. Keep hostas in containers well watered and feed fortnightly with a liquid feed throughout the growing season. Split and replant plants in containers every 2 to 3 years.
