Fragaria x ananassa 'Redgauntlet'
Strawberry 'Redgauntlet' - 9 cm
Fragaria x ananassaFragaria x ananassa 'Redgauntlet' is a long established mid-season variety, still valued after several decades for its heavy yields of medium-size bright red heart-shaped fruits over a long period. Especially good for jam making. Pick from mid- June to mid- July, with a second crop in September after a hot summer.
Plant 30-40cm (12-16in) apart in a well-prepared, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, in a sunny, sheltered site. Avoid frost pockets. Tuck straw or black polythene under them as the berries begin. For growing in containers use a good multi-purpose compost, keep well watered-preferably watering in the morning-and feed weekly with a high potash liquid feed. Good crops can also be produced using grow bags.
Bee and butterfly friendly.
