Fragaria x ananassa 'Sonata'
Strawberry 'Sonata' - 9 cm
Fragaria x ananassa 'Sonata' (PBR) is the model mid-season strawberry, producing reliably heavy crops of well-shaped, evenly sized bright red, glossy, sweet juicy fruit with an excellent flavour, unspoilt by heavy downpours and long hot periods. Pick from mid- June to mid- July. Plants are well adapted to Northern conditions, being very frost hardy.
Plant 30-40cm (12-16in) apart, in a well-prepared, well-drained soil rich in organic matter, in a sunny, sheltered site. Avoid frost pockets. Tuck straw or black polythene under them as the berries begin. For growing in containers use a good multi-purpose compost, keep well watered-preferably watering in the morning-and feed weekly with a high potash liquid feed. Good crops can also be produced using grow bags.
Bee and butterfly friendly.
