Brassica oleracea Cauliflower 'Gypsy' is a particularly useful variety for summer harvest, producing deep, round, white curds and without the pink tinge which can often occur on summer Cauliflowers. Its vigorous habit means this variety will also perform well on less fertile soils. Ideal for exhibition. Seeds are in the RHS Vegetable Collection.

Useful/additional information Sow seeds mid October, to overwinter in coldframe, transplant in March, February to March under glass or April outdoors, in seed trays or pots of good seed compost at 15-20C (59-68F) under glass or in a propagator. Outdoors, sow thinly 12mm (½ inch) deep in a prepared seedbed. Keep well watered. Overwintered plants and those hardened off from sowings under glass can be transplanted into well prepared, firm soil allowing 6x45cm (24x18 inches) between plants. Plant firmly with lower leaves just above soil level. Water until established. Water cauliflowers regularly and do not allow them to dry out as this may impair their development. Hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing and bring insect larvae to the surface. Summer cauliflowers can be harvested from late June to October when the curds are fully matured, and while they are still tight and firm. Culinary note: Cauliflowers freeze well.
