Speller Metcalfe to oversee multi-million pound renovation and retail site development
2 June 2014 - The Garden Centre Group, the nation's largest chain of garden centres and the parent company of the Garden & Leisure Group, has broken ground on the extensive renovation and development of Percy Thrower's Garden & Leisure, located in Shrewsbury.
The multi-million pound project will see the garden centre rebuilt and the site developed to house a new 6300 square metre retail unit. In addition Waitrose will subsequently build a new supermarket on the site adjacent to the new garden centre. The new destination garden centre will include a restaurant and a separate cafe for visitors, children's play areas, and expanded parking for customers. The existing Percy Thrower's garden centre will remain open to customers during this process to ensure customers can continue shopping at the centre. The new centre is expected to open in 2015.
Steve Masters, Estates Director at The Garden Centre Group, said: "We are delighted to announce our investment in this much loved garden centre. With beautiful garden and merchandise display areas, a number of eating and additional concession outlet facilities as well as room to roam and play inside and out, the centre will offer our customers a more modern, high-quality environment to inspire them in the garden and offer a delightful experience for a day out with the family."
Building contractor Speller Metcalfe has been chosen to oversee the works. Steve Speller, Joint MD at Speller Metcalfe, explained the significance of the project: "Percy Thrower is a household name in the West Midlands and we hope that this development will become a fitting legacy for someone who was so passionate about gardening. As a local contractor who know the area well, we will be doing everything we can to minimise any disruption to customers, which will include keeping the existing centre fully operational and open to the public throughout the building works."
