Crocosmia is an easy to grow perennial which gives good structure with its sword-like leaves and masses of fiery flowers in August and September.
It is free flowering, making a great display in your borders from June to September, during which time it is good at attracting butterflies and bees.
It is easy to grow in full sun or partial shade and likes moist but not waterlogged soil. The only real care is chopping back to ground level in winter.
Growing to approximately 60cm (2 ft) it prefers full sun but will grow in partial shade. For best results provide some support. It will grow in almost any soil type although it dislikes waterlogging.
New varieties have improved on the original adding more petals to give a ruffled effect and adding golden yellow to the petals but they have still retained the best attributes of the long flowering period and ease of growing.
The hot colours of these crocosmia varieties are excellent to plant with rudbeckia, helenium and gaillardia to make a fantastic hot border.
