|Penstemon ‘Pensham Plum Jerkum’|
With a massive range of colours, penstemons are an asset to any garden. From pure white through pinks and blues to aubergine purple, these tubular bell like flowers are produced in masses.
They are free flowering, making a great display in your borders from July to August, attracting bees which crawl down the long throat to find the nectar.
Penstemons are easy to grow and make excellent clumps, their only problem being that they can be short lived and damaged by the winter frosts so ensure that the soil is well drained to prevent waterlogging.
Growing to approximately 60cm (2 ft) they prefer full sun but will grow in partial shade. For best results provide some support. They will grow in almost any soil type although they dislike waterlogging.
Different penstemons can be used to create a range of colour schemes; a combination of white and blue varieties can be paired with Salvia nemorosa and Leucanthemum ‘Highland White Dream’ to give a cool themed border. Pink flowered varieties can be combined with the pastel colours of Achillea whilst the bright red varieties can be combined with Gaillardia ‘Goblin’ and Helenium ‘Sahins Early Flowerer’ for a hot border.
