|Sedum ‘Elsie’s Gold’|
One of the best plants to attract butterflies and bees to your garden is the sedum, commonly known as the ice plant.
A brand new introduction, only produced in 2008, Sedum ‘Elsie's Gold’ provides the best of both worlds with attractive variegated gold and green fleshy foliage with clusters of soft pink flowers in August and September.
It is very easy to grow, although it needs well drained soil, and is generally disease free. Being deciduous (loses its leaves over winter) it shoots away in the spring so remove old growth in early spring cutting down to ground level.
Growing to approximately 45cm (18”) it requires full sun. For best results provide some support. It will grow in almost any soil type although it must be well drained.
Sedums come in a wide range from low growing varieties such as ‘Rose Carpet’ with its attractive blue-grey foliage to taller 60cm (2 ft) varieties such as ‘Brilliant’. They can be grown with other plants specifically to attract butterflies such as buddleija, helenium, lavender, and verbena bonariensis to make your garden an oasis for butterflies and bees.
