x-Viburnum tinus 'Gwenllian'
A greatly loved evergreen shrub, Viburnum tinus has luxurious, dark green leaves and winter flowers that bloom almost endlessly on the plant for up to six months.
'Gwenllian' has clusters of fragrant, starry, white flowers that burst from pink tipped buds and are a welcome sight on a gloomy autumn or winter's day. A reliable performer when not much else is happening in the garden, the flowers are followed by metallic blue berries, once they have finally faded.
A tough shrub, "Gwenllian' is not fussy, happy in sun or shade, sheltered or exposed, windy sites so it is an ideal choice for a tricky spot. Once established, it is also drought resistant. It is quite a remarkable plant because although we value it in the winter garden, it actually hails from the Mediterranean, where it is used to hot summers and very little frosts.
'Gwenllian" makes an ideal specimen shrub, happy in borders or a large container, but is also a great hedging plant, its dense habit responding well to pruning. It can even be shaped and cut into topiary, which looks particularly fetching when in flower. Grow with other shrubs, like choisya or hydrangea or plant with early flowering crocus and narcissus for a charming spring display.
Its evergreen foliage is a good foil to herbaceous plants and it provides strong structure and height to a mixed border until finally, it comes into its own in October
